The Real Danger To Your Heart Is NOT Cholesterol

We have all heard over the course of the last several decades that one’s cholesterol level predicts their risk of heart attack and stroke.
“Patients frequently ask me, ‘How could I have heart disease – my cholesterol level is normal?’ or report to me, ‘I don’t have to worry because my good cholesterol is high’. As a cardiologist, I have both bad and good news: Your cholesterol level does not matter!” says Dr. Sullenberger.
So What is Cholesterol?
Cholesterol is actually a naturally occurring substance inside our bodies.
More specifically, cholesterol is a type of fat found within all cells and is free floating in blood on molecules called lipoproteins.
It is vital for our body to survive. It’s essential for the growth and function of our cells and is found in high concentrations in areas such as the brain and heart.
Your body knows how vital cholesterol is. In fact, the liver controls our cholesterol needs will make attempts to manufacture cholesterol if you don’t take in adequate cholesterol through your diet.
Cholesterol is your friend, and not your enemy.
What Cholesterol Does:
• Most hormones are made up of cholesterol molecules.
• Cholesterol is vital to cell function, inter-cell communication, & the development & maintenance of the cell membrane.
• Cholesterol is critical for brain and nerve function by helping form neurotransmitters and the myelin sheath that covers and protects your neurotransmitters. The myelin sheath is also critical for the proper ‘firing’ of nerve impulses.
• Cholesterol is also necessary for the synthesis of vitamin D3 from sunlight.
• Cholesterol is critical in the production of bile, which aids in digestion by breaking down fats, absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, and helping to eliminate waste products
Good Versus Bad Cholesterol
The two most common types of cholesterol are low-density lipoprotein (also known as LDL) which carries cholesterol to the tissues (“bad cholesterol”), and high-density lipoprotein (also known as HDL) which carries cholesterol to the liver to be flushed from the body (“good cholesterol”).
Cholesterol carried by LDL can invade the walls of blood vessels and increase inflammation within the walls of these blood vessels.
Cholesterol is a big part of arterial “plaque” which builds up within the walls of blood vessels, in particular within the walls of arteries which carry oxygen-containing blood to the organs such as your heart and brain.
In the heart, these situations can lead to chest pain (sometimes referred to as “angina”), shortness of breath, or a heart attack. In the head and neck, clogging or obstruction of an artery can lead to stroke. But that is not the complete story.
So Is Cholesterol Really The Culprit?
Many people that have what appears to be an advantageous cholesterol risk profile (low LDL, high HDL) still have heart attacks and strokes. Some call these people ‘fit but fat’.
On the other hand, we all know those people who have terrible lifestyle habits and poor cholesterol levels, but who still do not have any adverse effects. Some call these people ‘fat but fit’.
The best way to truly understand cardiovascular risk is to determine risk with an imaging study called a Coronary Calcium Scan.
A Coronary Calcium Scan is a non-contrast, low-radiation, CT scan of the heart which takes about just a few minutes to complete.
The heart scan is then reviewed for evidence of calcium within the arteries of the heart; the plaque within the heart arteries calcifies or scars over time and is easily seen on these types of CT scans.
Using a standardized software, the amount of calcified plaque is scored by an automated process.
The result of the test is usually given as a number called an “Agatston score“.
• A score of zero means no calcium is seen in the heart. It suggests a very low chance of developing a heart attack in the future.
• When calcium is present, the higher the score, the higher your risk of heart disease.
• A score of 100 to 300 means moderate plaque deposits. It’s associated with a relatively high risk of heart attack or other heart disease over the next three to five years.
• A score greater than 300 is a sign of very high-to-severe disease and heart attack risk.
So The Real Bad Guy is Calcification
In fact, tens of thousands of patients with different scores have been followed for years under various studies, when you ask most cardiologists they will tell you that they know that a patient’s coronary calcium score directly correlates to heart attack risk over time.
Coronary Calcium scans are far more predictive than cholesterol and lifestyle risk calculators because they directly look for complex plaque formation within the artery walls.
There is no test in the field of Cardiology which can provide a better prognosis for a patient than a score of zero on a Coronary Calcium Scan. Arthur Agatston M.D, Cardiologist and celebrity doctor best known as the developer of the South Beach Diet.
Too many heart attacks continue to occur in people considered low or intermediate risk because the traditional risk models aren’t great at predicting heart attacks.
Coronary calcium scoring is proving to be a game-changer in determining an individual’s risk.

This finding potentially could mean a lot of patients may not even require statin therapy, even though they have high cholesterol.
“If there is no atherosclerosis, you are not going to have a heart attack. So the coronary calcium score may allow us to much more effectively select who we treat.” says Dr. Brent Muhlestein Co-director of cardiology research at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute.
We Treat High Cholesterol With Statin Drugs Yet We Do Little About Calcification
Millions are treated for high cholesterol with the drug of choice called a Statin.
Statins are drugs that are made specifically to help lower your cholesterol.
They are easily the most prescribed drug in North America with millions upon millions of people on them.
Several statins are available for use in the North America. They include:
• Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
• Lovastatin (Altoprev)
• Pitavastatin (Livalo)
• Pravastatin (Pravachol)
• Rosuvastatin (Crestor)
• Simvastatin (Zocor)
How Do Statins Work?
Most of the cholesterol circulating in the blood is made by the liver.
Statins inhibit an enzyme called “HMG-CoA reductase”, a key player in determining the amount of cholesterol the liver makes.
By inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase we reduce the trigger for the liver to make more cholesterol.
But it’s not a very smart drug because it inhibits the production of both good and bad cholesterol.
The Defined Benefits of Statins
Statins can help lower low-density lipoproteins, also known as LDL or “bad” cholesterol, but they also reduce HDL “good” cholesterol.
Lowering your cholesterol levels with statins may help decrease your risk of stroke, heart attack, and other vessel-related diseases.
“They work better than any other cholesterol treatment,” says Richard N. Fogoros, MD, a cardiologist and former professor of medicine.
Statins may also help stabilize the blood vessel lining, making plaque less likely to rupture in the heart.
Statins may also help to relax the blood vessels, which can lead to a decrease in blood pressure.
The Risks of Statins
There are many drug company funded studies that show Statins do ONLY good, but these are of course biased.
The cholestoreal game is a really big business, over 14 billion/year!
Drug companies make some serious scratch from cholesterol lowering drugs.
Merck for example made $4.3 billion in just one year from its main statin ‘Simvastatin’.
Medical patents make a lot of money for patent holders.
Unfortunately for us, they cannot put patents on things that are natural and free, so there is no desire or profit to be made in studying and selling natural products.
This is also why so few studies exist on the impacts of some pretty well-regarded natural cholesterol lowering options like Niacin, Turmeric or Berberine.
The Side Effects of Statins
• Consistent headaches due to the overall lowering of cholesterol needed by the brain to function properly.
• Nausea due to a potential decrease in the amount of bile in the digestive system.
• Muscle cell damage called “Rhabdomyolysis” and the increased release of a protein called “myoglobin” into the bloodstream both of which lead to severe muscle pain and even kidney damage.
• Type 2 diabetes. Statins have been proven to increase blood sugar, which can lead to type 2 diabetes. In fact studies show statin use can increase diabetes risk by up to 50%.
• Liver damage. Statin use can cause an increase in specific liver enzymes causing liver damage, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, pain in your upper abdomen, dark-colored urine, or yellowing of your skin or eyes.
• Cognitive problems. Statins can also lead to memory loss and confusion.
• Interference with the manufacture of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a key substance responsible for energy production within the body.
• Nerve damage – the chances of nerve damage are up to 26 times higher in Statin users than in the general population because the reduction in cholesterol impacts the proper formation of the myelin sheath which protects nerve cells.
• Possible increased risk of cancer and heart failure with long-term use.
• Increased muscle damage from exercise and reduced exercise capacity.
• Increased risk for obesity and insulin resistance.

Statins Can Also Greatly Reduce CoEnzyme Q10 in The Body
Statin medications and low cholesterol levels can both contribute to low CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10) levels.
CoQ10 is vital because it is a potent antioxidant.
CoQ10 is necessary for the functioning of every cell in our body and without it we wouldn’t survive.
If enzymes like CoQ10 start to drop, so does our own health.
As more energy is required in the body, the more CoQ10 is needed, especially in the heart and other tissues that require lots of energy.
Low levels can result in higher blood pressure, heart attack, angina, immune system depression, periodontal disease, lack of energy and obesity.
So if on Statins, you may want to consider also taking a CoQ10 supplement.
Talk with your doctor to discuss this option, as many doctors today already suggest taking CoQ10 if on a Statin.
And So The Statin Debate Rages On…
The debate of Statin use good or bad rages on, the truth usually lays somewhere in the middle.
Regardless, the science today points clearly to calcification of arteries, NOT cholesterol as the key driver of heart attacks and stroke.
That’s the crucial point here is that many people may be on Statins without true need, and therefore are focused on a just one factor of heart disease, NOT the root cause – calcification.
If you’re on Statins today it’s important to ask questions. That does not mean you stop them if you have been prescribed them, it just means ask more questions.
If you HAVE NOT had a Coronary Calcium Scan – maybe it’s time to request one.
From there you and your doctor could be in a much better position to make a more educated decision on whether to use these types of medications as your optimal treatment option.
Fact: Doctors are great, but in the end, your insights are also very important to achieving the best outcomes in partnership with your doctor.
Diet, Lifestyle & Exercise Are Best – But It’s Not Easy
Of the thousands of studies done on heart health, the combination of diet, lifestyle and exercise always come out on top.
BUT for the vast majority of people that’s a lot easier said than done, so let’s be honest here shall we…
Eating right when you’re stressed, sleeping enough with the daily problems of life, and having the time (and actual desire) to workout is not easy for a lot of people.
Good thoughts and a few positive actions here and there may not push the needle enough.
But there is one simple tool we all have access to for more optimal heart-health and that tool is Organic Sulfur (MSM).
My Personal Story With MSM & Heart-Health
As someone who’s in their late 40’s, and who’s taken MSM for almost 10 years religiously, I’ve seen first-hand what pure MSM can do for heart-health, and overall wellness.
Please note: My story is of course my own personal experience, please do not take it as medical advice, or as a basis for self-diagnosis – it simply is not.
In fact, I’ve actually wrestled with sharing this for a very long time, as I do not share my personal details with ease, but I feel more today that it’s very important, as so many people need better heart-health and do not understand the true power of pure MSM.
So here goes…
I am a male, and at time of writing this I’m 47 years of age.
I work out when I can (3 – 4 x a week), and yes, even then I am slightly overweight, and yes, I DO enjoy my food, my wine and I’ll even have the occasional cigarette when I’m stressed out.
I love chips and chocolate, and to make it even worse, I’m of east-asian descent, meaning I am generally predisposed to heart issues.
About 10 years ago, I had my first heart stress test and a battery of heart tests that showed signs of plaque buildup.
These tests were spawned by the fact that I had a blood test and the cholesterol numbers that came back were not great.
My doctor told me to slow it down and focus on cutting cholesterol, and referred me to a local cardiologist, who was a 35 year veteran of cardiology and considered one of the best in his field.
The good doctor ran his ECG and stress tests, and it showed that there was some mild plaque buildup.
He suggested as a precaution that I start using a Statin drug daily, to which I politely declined.
Instead, I suggested we would re-review in a 6 – 10 months, and that in the meantime I would really watch what I eat and workout more consistently …Ya right…
Well about 6 months later and after weeks and weeks of research, I had decided to start using pure MSM (Organic Sulfur) – not for my heart at that point – but for my issues with carpal tunnel, tendon pain and inflammation in my right arm.
In just 2 weeks I was having great results with the MSM, my pain was all but gone, and also loved the way I felt overall, so I kept doing more research into Organic Sulfur, and the vast impacts it has and user ratings and feedback were simply incredible!
I was inspired to make MSM a key part of my life – for life!
In fact, MSM’s impact on me was so powerful that I decided more people had to know about it, and I went out to produce my own ultra-high quality and additive-free MSM, and started Happy Body back in 2011.
Fast Forward to 2016
After yet another blood test showing high cholesterol numbers, I was again sent back to my cardiologist who this time ordered a Coronary Calcium Scan and full ’64 slice’ MRI of my heart.
And guess what..?
My calcium score came back at ZERO..!
My cardiologist had never seen that number in all his years of practice for someone at my age and ethnicity.
So even though my cholesterol numbers were not great, after a few years of consistent MSM use, my plaque buildup was gone, and my arteries were now squeaky clean, smooth and flexible.
Bottom line: After using MSM consistently, daily, my calcium deposits were gone, and my risk of heart attack was now basically nill.
He asked me how?
I was not on any statins or other medications. I had not really changed my diet or started working out with the Rock.
He was truly stumped.
I told him it was most likely due to my consistent MSM use, to which he rolled his eyes and asked “what’s MSM?”
That statement shocked me, and made me both mad and sad inside.
Our doctors who for the most part are good people, and truly do care for our health, are only really versed in medications – not as much in basic nutrition or holistic approaches – that in my very humble opinion – should always be first in patient review.
The fact is that MSM is one of those very rare ‘wonder’ supplements that is ideal for so much – including better heart health.
Sadly, few know these things about MSM. Thus, I encourage anyone looking for better heart-health and overall wellness – who is both able and willing – to consider including pure MSM into their health regime daily.
Pure MSM does so many wonderful things in the body. Critical, important things!
So How Does MSM Help The Heart?
1. MSM Combats Arterial Inflammation
MSM allows cells throughout the body, including those inside your arteries, to eject inflammatory agents and reduce chronic inflammation throughout the system.
Organic Sulfur also helps restore permeability to cells allowing fluids to pass through and equalizes pressure within the cell.
Harmful inflammatory agents such as lactic acid and toxins are allowed to flow out, and nutrients and oxygen are permitted to flow in.
This helps stops the pressure, swelling, and fluid buildup, which is a root cause of inflammation throughout the body.
Studies looking at pulmonary hypertension, showed that doses of 100-400mg/kg of pure MSM for 10 days were able to decrease heart size, showcasing a reduction in inflammatory pressure, and toxic, lactic acid build up in and around the heart.

2. MSM is a VERY Powerful Decalcifier
Again, calcium deposits can greatly increase the buildup of plaque in arteries, which is a leading cause of arteriosclerosis and heart disease.
Think of it this way. Calcium buildup in arteries act like jagged little hands that latch onto cholesterol particles that flow through your arteries. Without that calcium buildup, the good and bad cholesterol can more easily just pass through.
MSM can have a very powerful effect on these calcium deposits and is beneficial for eliminating calcified plaque buildup, and scarring that occurs in the arteries.
Being a calcium phosphate dissolver, MSM helps to break up calcium deposits that tend to collect in various pockets of the body making them vulnerable to stiffness and chronic inflammation.
Over time, MSM helps dissolve calcified deposits. MSM does this by turning these deposits from calcium phosphate into calcium sulfate. By doing this, MSM makes the calcium deposits ‘soft and more soluble’ so the body can break them down and excrete them with greater ease.

3. MSM Keep Arteries Softer & More Flexible
MSM is also important to keeping arteries flexible and soft.
The body uses Sulfur to create new, healthy cells. Sulfur also provides the flexible bond between cells.
When low in Sulfur, the flexible bonds between cells becomes much more rigid.
This can lead to hardening of tissues that make up your arteries.

So Why Are There Such Few Studies On MSM?
While there are 60+ studies on MSM, there should be many more.
The simple (and sad) answer is that because Organic Sulfur(MSM) is a naturally occuring compound, it is NOT patentable.
So there is little money to be made for big business.
As a result there is little funded research on this amazing nutrient.
This is NOT conspiracy theory, it’s simple business math. There have been many books written on how we have been manipulated by big pharma.
Again – this is also NOT an attack on doctors or medicine, both are VERY important.
This is more about a balanced approach, and when it comes to health, a basic nutritional review should come first, and medicines ideally second – or in combination.

Our job is to find that sound. It is our purpose our reason to exist. What our talents, our gifts, calling to do.
When God SAID “a sound went out”, and He said “Let there be LIGHT”.
First was the SOUND, second was the Creation that the Sound brought forth and created. The Light, The Christ. TheWord, we know as Jesus, The Creation.
We are that LIGHT, we are that Creation of God, His Sons and Daughters, His Children, created in HIS image, to do the Will of the Father.
All of the other things created for us before we even came to live in them, heavens, earth, parted waters, land, seed, food, animal kingdoms. Were all created for us to live in and enjoy.
So look deep inside and find your sound,
sing it out to the Lord, so that all creation can line up to harmony of Gods will in you and us and this whole realm of the earth.
Sing a new song unto the Lord, your song from your heart back unto God.
He is waiting to hear you.

Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca, is well-known for its powerful antiseptic properties and ability to treat wounds, which is why it’s one of the top antibacterial essential oils. Tea tree is a volatile essential oil derived mainly from the Australian native plant Melaleuca alternifolia. It’s been widely used throughout Australia for at least the past 100 years and for over seven decades, it’s been documented in numerous medical studies for its ability to kill many strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Tea tree oil uses are numerous — it can be used to make homemade cleaning products, diffused to kill toxic mold that’s growing in your home, and applied topically to heal skin issues and treat skin infections. I use this powerful essential oil in my tea tree oil for acne recipe and many other DIY recipes that have become part of my daily routine.
Tea tree oil becoming an increasingly popular active ingredient in a variety of household and cosmetic products, including disinfectant sprays, face washes, shampoos, massage oils, skin and nail creams and laundry detergents. Tea tree’s natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory actions make it one of the most beneficial essential oils that should included as part of your natural medicine cabinet. (1)
What Is Tea Tree Oil?
Tea tree oil is a volatile essential oil derived from the Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia. The Melaleuca genus belongs to the Myrtaceae family and contains approximately 230 plant species, almost all of which are native to Australia.
Tea tree oil (or TTO) is an ingredient in many topic formulations that are used to treat infections, and it’s marketed as an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent in Australia, Europe and North America. You can also find tea tree in a variety of household and cosmetic products, like cleaning products, laundry detergent, shampoos, massage oils, and skin and nail creams. So what is tea tree oil good for? Well, it’s one of the most popular essential oils because it works as a powerful disinfectant and is gentle enough to apply topically in order to fight skin infections and irritations. (2)
Tea tree’s primary active ingredients include terpene hydrocarbons, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. It is these compounds that give tea tree its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activity. There are actually over 100 different chemical components of tea tree oil — terpinen-4-ol and alpha-terpineol are the most active — and various ranges of concentrations. The volatile hydrocarbons found in the oil are considered aromatic and capable of traveling through air, pores of the skin and mucus membranes. That’s why tea tree oil is commonly used aromatically and topically to kill germs, fight infections and soothe skin conditions. (3)
9 Tea Tree Oil Benefits
1. Fight Acne and Other Skin Conditions
Due to tea tree oil’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, it has potential to work as a natural remedy for acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis.
A 2017 pilot study conducted in Australia evaluated the efficacy of tea tree oil gel compared to a face wash without tea tree in the treatment of mild to moderate facial acne. Participants in the tea tree group applied the oil to their faces twice a day for a 12-week period. Those using tea tree experienced significantly fewer facial acne lesions compared to those using the face wash. No serious adverse reactions occurred, but there were some minor side effects like peeling, dryness and scaling, all of which resolved without any intervention. (4)
2. Improve Dry Scalp
Research suggests that tea tree oil is able to improve symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis, which is a common skin condition that causes scaly patches on the scalp and dandruff. It’s also reported to help alleviate contact dermatitis symptoms.
A 2002 human study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology investigated the efficacy of 5 percent tea tree oil shampoo and placebo in patients with mild to moderate dandruff. After a four-week treatment period, participants in the tea tree group showed a 41 percent improvement in the severity of dandruff, while only 11 percent of those in the placebo group showed improvements. Researchers also indicated an improvement in patient itchiness and greasiness after using tea tree oil shampoo. (5)
3. Soothe Skin Irritations
Although the research on this is limited, tea tree oil’s antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties may make it a useful tool for soothing skin irritations and wounds. There is some evidence from a pilot study that after being treated with tea tree oil, patient wounds had begun to heal and reduced in size. (6) And there have been case studies that show tea tree oil’s ability to treat infected chronic wounds. (7)
Tea tree oil may be effective in reducing inflammation, fighting skin or wound infections and reducing wound size. It can be used to soothe sunburns, sores and insect bites, but only when it has been tested on a small patch of skin first to rule out a sensitivity to topical application.
4. Fight Bacterial, Fungal and Viral Infections
According to a scientific review on tea tree that’s published in Clinical Microbiology Reviews, data clearly shows the broad-spectrum activity of tea tree oil due to its antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. This means, in theory, that tea tree oil can be used to fight a number of infections, from MRSA to athlete’s foot. Researchers are still evaluating these tea tree benefits, but they have been shown in some human studies, lab studies and anecdotal reports.
Lab studies have showed that tea tree oil can inhibit the growth of bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae. These bacteria cause serious infections, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness, bloodstream infections, strep throat, sinus infections and impetigo. (8)
Because of tea tree oil’s antifungal properties, it may have the ability to fight or prevent fungal infections like candida, jock itch, athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. (9)
A randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded study conducted in Australia tested the efficacy of tea tree oil in the treatment of athlete’s foot compared to placebo. Patients in the treatment group received either 25 percent tea tree oil solution, 50 percent tea tree oil solution or placebo. They were instructed to apply the solution twice daily to the affected areas for four weeks.
Researchers reported a clinical response in 68 percent of the 50 percent tea tree group, 72 percent of the 25 percent tea tree group, and 39 percent in the placebo group. Of the 158 patients that participated in the study, four experienced moderate to severe skin reactions to the treatment that improved quickly after they stopped using the solution. (10)
Lab studies show that tea tree oil has the ability to fight recurrent herpes virus (which causes cold sores) and influenza. The antiviral activity of tea tree oil has been attributed to the presence of terpinen-4-ol, one of the oil’s main active components. (11, 12, 13)
And if you’re wondering if tea tree oil can get rid of warts, you’re in luck. A 2008 case study found that when tea tree oil was applied topically once daily to a wart on a pediatric patient’s middle finger, the wart completely disappeared after 12 days of treatment. This is another example of tea tree’s antiviral activity. (14)
5. May Help Prevent Antibiotic Resistance
Essential oils like tea tree oil and oregano oil are being used in replacement of or along with conventional medications because they too serve as powerful antibacterial agents, without the adverse side effects. Research published in The Open Microbiology Journal indicates that some essential oils, like tea tree oil, have a positive synergistic effect when combined with conventional antibiotics.
Researchers are optimistic that this means essential oils may help prevent antibiotic resistance from developing. This is extremely important in modern medicine because antibiotic resistance may lead to treatment failure, increased healthcare costs and the spread of infection control problems. (15)
6. Relieve Congestion and Respiratory Tract Infections
Very early in its history, the leaves of the malaleuca plant were crushed and inhaled to treat coughs and colds. Traditionally, the leaves were also soaked to make an infusion that was used to treat sore throats.
Today, studies show that tea tree oil has antimicrobial activity, giving it the ability to fight bacteria that lead to nasty respiratory tract infections, and antiviral activity that’s helpful for fighting or even preventing congestion, coughs and the common cold. This is exactly why tea tree is one of the top essential oils for cough and respiratory issues. (16)
7. Help Treat Head Lice
Tea tree oil has insecticidal effects and can be used to get rid of head lice, which are small, parasitic insects that feed on human blood. A lab study conducted in Italy investigated the efficacy of tea tree oil against lice and its eggs. Tea tree was used alone and in combination with nerolidol and tested at different ratios against 69 head lice and 187 eggs over a six-month period.
Researchers found that tea tree oil alone was more effective against head lice, with treatment resulting in 100 percent mortality after 30 minutes of exposure. A higher concentration of tea tree oil was able to induce the failure of 50 percent of the eggs to hatch. When tea tree oil was combined with nerolidol at a 1:2 ratio, the two substances caused the death of all head lice within 30 minutes and the abortive effect of lice eggs after 5 days of treatment. 8. Help Treat Scabies
A common question is “can tea tree oil get rid of scabies?” The answer, according to lab studies, is yes. A study conducted at Flinders University in Australia found that 5 percent tea tree oil and its active component terpinen-4-ol were highly effective in reducing the survival of scabies mites. Tea tree works as a natural treatment for scabies because it has powerful antimicrobial properties, giving it the ability to heal scabies on top of and beneath the skin. (18)
9. Improve Bad Breath
Bad breath comes from bacteria that is found in your mouth, especially the back of your tongue, throat and tonsils. Because tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that can kill this bacteria, it works as a natural remedy for bad breath.
An in vitro study also shows that tea tree oil acts as an effective antiseptic agent against oral pathogens, including Candida albicans, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. This tea tree oil benefit can be extremely helpful after oral surgery, like a root canal, that increases your risk of developing a bacterial or fungal infection. (19)
But keep in mind that tea tree oil should not be used internally, so if you are using it as a mouthwash to kill oral germs, make sure to spit it out afterwards and rinse your mouth with water.
Top 14 Tea Tree Oil Uses
Tea tree oil can be used to make natural beauty, health and cleaning products that are free from dangerous chemicals. Tree tree oil can be used in the following ways:
• Aromatically: Diffuse tea tree oil throughout your home using an oil diffuser. You can also directly inhale the oil by sniffing it right out of the bottle.
• Topically: Tea tree oil can be applied to the skin topically, but you should always dilute it with a carrier oil (like coconut oil) in a 1:1 ratio before applying it.
• NOT for Internal Use: According to the National Poison Center, tea tree oil is known to be poisonous if swallowed. Tea tree oil should NOT be taken by mouth for any reason. If you are using tea tree for bad breath or oral health, make sure you spit it out afterwards to prevent potential side effects like digestive issues, hives or dizziness. (20)
Here are some basic ways that you can use tea tree oil at home to transform your health.
1. Natural Acne Fighter
One of the most common uses for tea tree oil today is in skin care products, as it’s considered one of the most effective home remedies for acne. You can make a homemade gentle tea tree oil acne face wash by mixing five drops of pure tea tree essential oil with two teaspoons of raw honey. Simply rub the mixture on your face, leave it on for one minute, and then rinse it off with warm water.
2. Improve Psoriasis and Eczema
Tea tree oil may help relieve many types of skin inflammation, including being used as a natural eczema treatment and for reducing psoriasis. Simply mix one teaspoon of coconut oil, five drops of tea tree oil and five drops of lavender oil to make your own skin improving lotion or body soap.
3. Boost Hair Health
Tea tree oil has proven very beneficial for the health of your hair and scalp. Like coconut oil for hair, tea tree oil has the ability to soothe dry, flaking scalp and remove dandruff. To make homemade tea tree oil shampoo, mix several drops of tea tree essential oil with aloe vera gel, coconut milk and other essential oils like lavender oil.
4. Natural Treatment for Lice
To get rid of head lice naturally, combine 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with 1 teaspoon each of ylang ylang and tea tree oils. Apply this mixture all over the scalp, massaging it in thoroughly. Then comb through the hair with a fine tooth comb, cover the head with a shower cap and let it sit for two hours. Then comb through the hair again and rinse out the oils.
Next, combine 2 cups of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water, and apply the mixture with a spray bottle until the hair is completely saturated. Then rinse the hair and comb through it again. The last step is to apply a light application of coconut oil and leave it in. This process needs to be repeated every five to 10 days for a couple of weeks to ensure that all lice and eggs are killed. Continue to comb through hair with a fine tooth comb and using coconut oil as a leave-in conditioner.
5. Natural Household Cleaner
Another fantastic way to use tea tree oil is as a household cleaner. Tea tree oil presents powerful antimicrobial activity that can kill off bad bacteria in your home. To make a homemade tea tree oil cleanser, mix 5–10 drops of tea tree with water, vinegar and 5–10 drops of lemon essential oil. Then use it on your counter tops, kitchen appliances, shower, toilet and sinks.
You can also use my homemade bathroom cleaner recipe that’s made with a combination of natural cleaning products, like liquid castile soap, apple cider vinegar and baking soda.
6. Laundry Freshener
Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties, so it works great as a natural laundry freshener, especially when your laundry is musty or even moldy. Simply add 5–10 drops of tea tree to your laundry detergent. You can also spot clean cloth, rugs or athletic equipment with a mixture of tea tree oil, vinegar and water.
7. Fight Toenail Fungus and Ringworm
Because of its ability to kill parasites and fungal infections, tea tree oil is a great choice to use on nail fungus (onychomycosis), athlete’s foot and ringworm. Put 2–5 drops of undiluted tea tree oil on the affected area using a clean cotton swab. And for stubborn fungi, consider mixing it with natural anti-fungal oil of oregano. Tea tree oil has also been proven beneficial for treating and removing warts, so simply put a few drops of tea tree oil directly on the area for 30 days once or twice daily.
8. Improve Foot Odor
Here’s another example of how tea tree oil’s antibacterial activity is super beneficial. If you’re dealing with stinky feet or you need to get a funky smell out of your shoes, tea tree oil is a great remedy. For foot odor, combine about half a teaspoon of coconut oil and 2–3 drops of tea tree oil and massage the mixture into your feet.
You can also try my exfoliating foot scrub recipe that will leave your feet smooth and odor-free. To remove shoe odor, add 5–10 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle filled half way with water and spray the inside of your shoes. This works for sports equipment too.
9. Kill Mold
A common problem many people experience in their homes is mold infestation, oftentimes without even being aware of it. Sometimes, people even begin to experience black mold symptoms when they are exposed to this toxin in their homes. Consider buying a diffuser and diffusing tea tree oil in the air around your home to kill mold and other bad bacteria. Also, you can spray tea tree oil all-purpose cleaner onto shower curtains, and into your laundry machine, dishwasher or toilet to kill off mold and other bacteria.
10. Natural DIY Deodorant
Another great reason to use tea tree oil is to eliminate body odor. Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that destroy the bacteria on your skin that cause body odor. You can make homemade tea tree oil deodorant by mixing a few drops with coconut oil and baking soda. (Yes, you can see that coconut oil uses and baking soda uses are many as well!
11. Protect Wounds and Cuts
Tea tree oil is the perfect ingredient in a homemade wound ointment because of its antibacterial and antifungal properties. Just make sure to clean a cut first with water and hydrogen peroxide if necessary, then put on 1–3 drops of tea tree oil and cover it with a bandage to help fight off infections. You can also make my homemade drawing salve that will help to heal skin inflammation, insect bites, boils and splinters.
12. Natural Toothpaste for Oral Health
Because of tea tree oil’s ability to kill off bad bacteria and at the same time soothe inflamed skin, it’s a perfect ingredient in homemade toothpaste and mouthwash. It may help to reduce the bleeding of gums and tooth decay, too. To get rid of bad breath and improve your oral health, simply mix a few drops of tea tree oil with coconut oil and baking soda for an amazing homemade toothpaste.
13. Natural Insect Repellent
Not only does tea tree oil work as a natural insect repellent, but it also helps to soothe bug bites. Because bug repellents typically contain toxic chemicals, using a natural option like tea tree oil is gentler on your skin.
Simply add 2–5 drops of tea tree oil to a spray bottle filled half way with water and spray it on your skin, or combine 2–5 drops of tea tree with a teaspoon of coconut oil and rub it into your skin before going outside. If you do get a bug bite, add 2–3 drops of tea tree to a clean cotton ball and apply it to the affected area.
14. Cough Reliever
To relieve a cough that’s caused by the common cold or another respiratory condition, simply diffuse 5 drops at home, inhale tea tree oil directly from the bottle, or combine 1–2 drops of tea tree with a half-teaspoon of coconut oil and rub the mixture into your chest and back of your neck.
Precautions and Possible Tea Tree Oil Side Effects
Tea tree is generally considered safe when used aromatically and topically and doesn’t cause side effects in most cases. However, if you have sensitive skin, it’s possible that you might experience a reaction. Keep tea tree oil away from your eyes, contact lenses, inner nose and sensitive parts of your skin. This essential oil possesses a sharp camphoraceous odor followed by a menthol-like cooling sensation, which can make your skin feel like it’s slightly burning if you apply too much. Remember that tea tree oil should not be consumed and if you are using it for oral health, it needs to be spit out so that none is swallowed.
When used in topical products at a concentration of 5–10 percent, it normally doesn’t cause allergies or skin rashes, but stronger concentration have been reported to cause dermatitis reactions. In 1999, tea tree oil was added to the North American Contact Dermatitis Group screening panel and test results showed that about 1.4 percent of patients referred for patch testing had a positive reaction to tea tree oil. It’s always a good idea to do a small skin patch test first on your arm or leg to make sure you don’t have a negative reaction before using larger amounts or applying it to your face, chest or neck.
When you are buying tea tree oil, always look for 100 percent pure essential oil and check that the correct species name is listed on the bottle’s label (Melaleuca alternifolia). Ideally look for oil that’s therapeutic grade and organic, which ensures it’s been tested and meets all criteria, plus it will be free from chemical toxins, fillers or solvents. You can buy tea tree oil online or in your local health food store.
Light, heat, exposure to air, and moisture all affect oil stability of essential oils, so keep your tree oil stored in dark, cool, dry conditions preferably in a glass container.
A BBC News piece released in early 2018 was a cause for concern for many over the possible estrogenic effects of tea tree and lavender essential oils. Journalists reviewed case studies of a total of six young boys diagnosed with a condition known as gynecomastia, a condition in young men who develop breast tissue.
While gynecomastia during puberty is considered normal and usually idiopathic (without a known cause) and clears up on its own, these six case children developed extra breast tissue before entering puberty, which is a cause for concern, and all had been exposed to lavender oil alone or with tea tree essential oil. In the first review of three cases, the authors confirmed that removing the substance from the boys’ exposure resulted in a reversal of their condition. The second grouping of studies was unclear whether or not the substance was removed or if the condition was reversed. (21, 22)
Another review on these two oils demonstrated that they do seem to act like estrogens in lab settings (in vitro studies). (23)
This may seem like a convincing piece of evidence to prove that lavender and/or tea tree oil could cause estrogen-like activity in men. However, don’t throw away your oils just yet — these case studies and lab results aren’t enough to give scientific proof. Other evidence points the opposite direction.
For instance, a risk assessment on tea tree oil found that while certain compounds in the oil do have in vitro estrogen qualities, those aren’t the compounds that are “bioavailable,” meaning absorbed into the skin. (24) Tea tree oil isn’t safe to ingest, so skin absorption is the only way the active compounds enter your body. No human studies have recorded estrogenic side effects of tea tree oil. (25)
The only (very mild) instance of lavender and tea tree oils definitively acting in an estrogenic way in humans is in a study in women with mild idiopathic hirsutism (male-pattern hair growth), in which the oils did seem to be somewhat effective in reducing this hair growth. No other reactions were reported. (26)
However, other attempts to replicate lavender oil’s supposed estrogen-like actions have failed in animals. (27)
Multiple accounts have reviewed these findings and come to the conclusion that these case studies (and their portrayal in the media) are reporting something that simply cannot be proven. (28, 29) The close relations of the boys in each of the separate case study reports suggest there may be another underlying cause in the products that seemed to cause gynecomastia in these subjects. At least one author has suggested a potential toxic response to pesticides or other hormone-disrupting chemicals, as none of the essential oils in question were organic, and the products considered responsible were not tested for other potential toxins such as these. (30)
Basically, it seems unlikely that these isolated incidents were the result of essential oils that have been used safely for decades, but rather just that: isolated, and possibly the result of other factors. However, if you notice any estrogen-like reactions in young boys, you should always consult your doctor in case this points to something more serious.

Sambucus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The different species of Sambucus are commonly called elderberry or elder. The berries and flowers of the elder plant are used as medicine.
Elderberry is native to Europe, Africa and parts of Asia, but it’s become common in the U.S. It has deciduous leaves, white flowers (elderflowers) and berries that turn from green to red to black when ripe. Elder is commonly found growing in woodlands and hedgerows.
Sambucus nigra is the full scientific name of the most common variety used for medicinal purposes, as well as the species on which the majority of scientific research has been conducted. It’s a deciduous tree growing up to 32 feet tall with cream-white flowers and blue-black berries. Other common names for Sambucus nigra include black elder, European elder, European elderberry and European black elderberry. The elderberry bush or elderberry tree yields the berries that are commonly used in syrups, jams and wine, among other medicinal and culinary delights.
In addition to black elderberry, there are several other varieties available as well. Some of the most common include:
• Black lace elderberry
• Red elderberry
• Adams elderberry
• Lemon lace elderberry
• Black beauty elderberry
• Blue elderberry
• York elderberry
European elder flowers contain approximately 0.3 percent of an essential oil composed of free fatty acids and alkanes. The triterpenes alpha- and beta-amyrin, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, betulin, betulinic acid and a variety of other minor components have been identified. Elderberry fruit contains quercetin, kaempferol, rutin, and phenolic acids. It also contains flavonoids, which have antioxidant properties that can help prevent cell damage, and anthocyanidins, which are chemical compounds that are known to have immune-boosting properties.
The raw berries are made up of 80 percent water, 18 percent carbohydrates, and less than 1 percent each of protein and fat. Elderberries are naturally high in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B6, iron and potassium, among several other essential nutrients.
Health Benefits and Uses
1. Provides Cold and Flu Relief
One of the most well-studied elderberry syrup benefits is its powerful immune-boosting properties. The berries contain chemical compounds called anthocyanidins, which are known to have immunostimulant effects.
Research actually shows that elderberry extract is a safe, efficient and cost-effective treatment for cold and flu symptoms.
A 2016 study published in Nutrients showed that elderberry supplementation was able to reduce cold duration and symptoms in air travelers. Travelers using this herb from 10 days before travel until four to five days after arrival overseas experienced, on average, a two-day shorter duration of their colds as well as a noticeable reduction in cold symptoms.
Several studies have found benefits to support the use of elderberry syrup for flu symptoms as well. Specifically, the flavonoids in the extract bind to the H1N1 human influenza virus as well as the H5N1 avian influenza virus.
A 2009 study randomized patients into two groups. One group was given four doses of 175-milligram proprietary elderberry extract daily, and the other group received a placebo for two days. The group treated with the extract showed significant improvement in most flu symptoms, while the placebo group showed no improvement in symptom severity. Researchers conclude that the extract is effective in controlling influenza symptoms.
Another study published in the Journal of International Medical Research showed that when the extract is used within the first 48 hours of the onset of flu symptoms, it can shorten the duration of flu symptoms by an average of four days.
2. Reduces Sinus Infection Symptoms
With elderberry’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, it makes sense that it can help treat sinus issues. A sinus infection is a condition in which the cavities around the nasal passages become inflamed, and this antiviral herb has promise as a sinus infection natural remedy.
A study conducted by the Institute of Complementary Medicine’s Department of Internal Medicine at the University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland examined the use of a product called Sinupret, which contains elderberry extract. The researchers used Sinupret to treat bacterial sinusitis along with an antibiotic (doxycycline or vibramycin) and a decongestant. Interestingly enough, those who took the combination did better compared to those who did not take Sinupret at all.
3. Lowers Blood Sugar
Both the elder flower and the berry have traditionally been used to treat diabetes. Research has confirmed that extracts of elderflower stimulate glucose metabolism and the secretion of insulin, which could potentially help lower blood sugar levels.
Research published in the Journal of Nutrition evaluated black elderberry’s insulin-like and insulin-releasing actions in vitro. The study found that an aqueous extract of elder significantly increased glucose transport, glucose oxidation and glycogenesis without any added insulin. Glycogenesis is the process by which excess sugar is cleared out of the bloodstream and into your muscles and liver to help maintain normal blood sugar.
Furthermore, a 2017 animal study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences noted that elderberries can serve as a potential source of bioactive compounds for formulations used for the management of diabetes. Researchers found that both lipophilic and polar extracts of the berry lowered insulin resistance in rats with type 2 diabetes.
4. Acts as a Natural Diuretic
A diuretic is a substance that promotes the production of urine. Doctors prescribe diuretics when the body retains too much fluid, which is a common problem in older adults. Thanks to its ability to act as a natural diuretic, elderberry has been shown to promote both urination and bowel moments to help protect against fluid retention.
5. Promotes Regularity
Some research suggests that elderberry tea benefits constipation and can help support regularity and digestive health. A small, randomized trial found that a specific compound containing elderberries along with several other plants could act as an effective natural laxative for the treatment of constipation.
Unfortunately, however, there are currently no studies evaluating elderberry itself for constipation relief, so more research is still needed.
6. Supports Skin Health
Elderberry has made its way into cosmetic products, and for good reason. Its content of bioflavonoids, antioxidants and vitamin A makes it awesome for skin health. Not only that, but researchers also suspect that a compound found in the berry could give a natural boost to skin.
Anthocyanin is a type of natural plant pigment found in elderberry that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some researchers suspect that this compound may improve skin’s structure and condition to enhance overall skin health.
7. Eases Allergies
In addition to using elderberry syrup for colds, the flowers of the elder plant are also known to be an effective herbal allergy remedy. Since allergies involve an overreaction of the immune system as well as inflammation, the herb’s ability to improve immune function and calm inflammation can help provide allergy relief.
Some herbalists put black elder flower on the list of most effective herbs used for treating hay fever-like symptoms. It can be used for allergies on its own or in combination with other herbs and natural remedies.
8. Could Have Cancer-Fighting Effects
Edible berry extracts like elderberry extract are rich in anthocyanins and have been shown to have a broad spectrum of therapeutic, pharmacologic and anti-carcinogenic properties. In vitro studies specifically indicate that the elderberry has some chemopreventive properties, which can help inhibit, delay or reverse cancer formation.
One study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food compared the anticancer properties of European and American elderberry fruits. European elderberry (Sambucus nigra) is known for its medicinal use and contains anthocyanins, flavonoids and other polyphenolics, which all contribute to the high-antioxidant capacity of its berries. American elderberry (Sambucuscanadensis) has not been grown or promoted as a medicinal plant like its European relative.
This study tested extracts of both berries to assess anticancer potential and found that both demonstrated significant chemopreventive potential. Additionally, the American elder extract showed inhibition of ornithine decarboxylase, which is an enzyme marker related to the promotion stage of cancer formation. Thus, elderberries show potential as cancer-fighting foods.
9. May Improve Heart Health
Although studies have found mixed results, some research suggests that elderberry extract may improve heart health. For example, one animal model showed that giving mice with high cholesterol and HDL cholesterol dysfunction anthocyanin-rich black elderberry extract helped reduce hepatic cholesterol levels and improved HDL function. This may be due to the presence of anthocyanins, which are polyphenols that have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
Another study found that elderberry extract may have beneficial effects on high blood pressure. When polyphenols extracted from the plant were administered with renin inhibitors to rats with hypertension, they reduced arterial pressure. Researchers suggest that using polyphenols to lower blood pressure may also help reduce the side effects of blood pressure-lowering medications and improve overall quality of life.
How to Use Elderberry
Wondering where to buy elderberry and how to start adding it to your diet? It is available at many local health stores and online retailers and can be purchased in a variety of different forms. Elderberry gummies, elderberry wine and elderberry juice are all popular options for getting your fix of this incredible ingredient.
When it comes to colds, flu and upper respiratory issues, elderberry syrup is very popular. There are high-quality brands readily available for purchase, or you can find many online resources for how to make elderberry syrup to try making it at home. Most elderberry syrup recipe options out there involve simmering elderberries with a bit of water and a variety of other healing herbs for 45 minutes to an hour.
Elderberry tea is another great option, especially if you use elderberry for flu and cold symptoms. You can either buy teabags or purchase dried berries or flowers and make a tea by combining one tablespoon of berries or flowers with eight ounces of water. Try adding honey, lemon, cinnamon or mint to give the flavor and health benefits a hearty boost.
Not a fan of hot teas or black elderberry syrup? Then you can try elderberry juice, which is sweet, tart and refreshing. Just be sure not to purchase one that has too much added sugar.
Safe to Eat? Potential Risks and Side Effects
Despite the many health benefits associated with this medicinal plant, there are several elderberry side effects to consider as well. Ripe, cooked berries from most of the Sambucus species are edible. However, you should not consume raw berries or other parts of the plant since they contain a cyanide-inducing chemical, which can result in diarrhea and vomiting. Generally, commercial preparations don’t cause adverse reactions when used at recommended dosages.
Elderberry appears to have few side effects when used properly for short periods of time of up to five days. Occasionally, however, elderflowers and elderberries can cause allergic reactions. Discontinue use if you have a mild allergic reaction, and seek medical attention if you have a serious allergic reaction.
Using elderberry syrup for kids is not recommended unless you’ve consulted with your pediatrician. If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, don’t take it, as research is lacking on its effects on fetal health and development.
If you have an autoimmune disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ask your doctor before taking elderberry because it may stimulate the immune system. If you have any other ongoing health concerns, talk with your health care provider before taking it as well. People with organ transplants should not take elderberry.

We know that we do not fight alone, for you are constantly at work on behalf of your children, shielding, protecting, strengthening, exposing deeds of darkness, bringing to light what needs to be known, covering us from the cruel attacks we face even when we’re unaware.
We ask that you would give us wisdom and discernment to recognize the schemes of the enemy in our lives and to stand strong against his work.

We ask that you would help us to stay alert in a dark world that tries hard to make things look “not so bad.”

What Is Oregano Oil?
Oregano oil comes from the leaves and shoots of the oregano plant.
Botanically known as Origanum vulgare, oregano is a flowering plant from the same family as mint. It is often used as an herb to flavor food.
Although it is native to Europe, it now grows all over the world.
Oregano has been popular ever since the Greeks and Romans used it for medicinal purposes in ancient times. In fact, the name oregano comes from the Greek words "oros," meaning mountain, and "ganos," meaning joy or delight.
Oregano oil is made by air-drying the leaves and shoots of the plant. Once they are dried, the oil is extracted and concentrated by steam distillation (1).
The oil contains compounds called phenols, terpenes and terpenoids, which have powerful antioxidant properties and are responsible for its fragrance (2):
• Carvacrol: The most abundant phenol in oregano oil. It has been shown to stop the growth of several different types of bacteria (3Trusted Source).
• Thymol: A natural antifungal that can also support the immune system and protect against toxins (4).
• Rosmarinic acid: A powerful antioxidant that helps protect against damage caused by free radicals (5Trusted Source).
These compounds are thought to underlie oregano's many health benefits.
Here are nine potential benefits and uses of oregano oil.
1. Natural Antibiotic
Oregano oil and the carvacrol it contains may help fight bacteria.
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria are one of the most common causes of infection. They cause ailments including food poisoning and skin infections.
One particular study looked at whether oregano oil improved the survival of mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus.
Six out of 14 (43%) of the mice given oregano oil lived past 30 days, a survival rate nearly as high as the 7 out of 14 (50%) survival rate for mice that received regular antibiotics (6Trusted Source).
Research has also shown that oregano oil may be effective against types of bacteria that can become resistant to antibiotics.
This includes Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E. coli, both of which are common causes of urinary tract and respiratory tract infections (7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source).
Summary One mouse study found oregano oil to be almost as effective as antibiotics against common bacteria, though much more research is needed.
2. May Help Lower Cholesterol
Studies have shown that oregano oil may help lower cholesterol.
In one study, 48 people with mildly high cholesterol were given diet and lifestyle advice to help lower their cholesterol. Thirty-two participants were also given 0.85 ounces (25 ml) of oregano oil after each meal.
After three months, those given the oregano oil had lower "bad" LDL cholesterol, and higher "good" HDL cholesterol, compared to those just given diet and lifestyle advice (9Trusted Source).
Carvacrol, the main compound in oregano oil, has also been shown to help lower cholesterol in mice that were fed a high-fat diet over 10 weeks.
The mice given carvacrol alongside the high-fat diet had significantly lower cholesterol at the end of the 10 weeks, compared to those that were just given a high-fat diet (10Trusted Source).
The cholesterol-lowering effect of oregano oil is thought to be the result of the phenols carvacrol and thymol (11Trusted Source)
Summary Oregano oil has been shown to lower cholesterol in studies of people and mice with high cholesterol. This is thought to be the result of the compounds carvacrol and thymol.
3. Powerful Antioxidant
Antioxidants help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
It is thought that free radical damage plays a role in aging and the development of some diseases, such as cancer and heart disease.
Free radicals are everywhere, and are a natural product of metabolism.
However, they can build up in the body through exposure to environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke and air pollutants.
One study compared the antioxidant content of 39 commonly used herbs, and found that oregano had the highest concentration of antioxidants.
It found that oregano contained 3–30 times the levels of antioxidants in the other herbs studied, which included thyme, marjoram and St. John's wort.
Oregano also has 42 times the antioxidant level of apples and four times that of blueberries, gram per gram. This is thought to be mostly due to its rosmarinic acid content (12Trusted Source).
Because oregano oil is very concentrated, you need much less oregano oil to get the same antioxidant benefits as you would with fresh oregano.
Summary Fresh oregano has a very high antioxidant content that is much higher than that of most fruits and vegetables, gram per gram. The antioxidant content is concentrated in oregano oil.
4. Could Help Treat Yeast Infections
Yeast is a type of fungus. It can be harmless, but overgrowth can result in gut problems and infections, such as thrush.
The most well-known yeast is called Candida, which is the most common cause of yeast infections worldwide (13Trusted Source).
In test-tube studies, oregano oil has been found to be effective against five different types of Candida, such as those that cause infections in the mouth and vagina. In fact, it was more effective than any other essential oil tested (14Trusted Source).
Test-tube studies have also found that carvacrol, one of the main compounds of oregano oil, is very effective against oral Candida (15Trusted Source).
High levels of the yeast Candida have also been associated with some gut conditions, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (16Trusted Source).
A test-tube study of the effectiveness of oregano oil on 16 different strains of Candida concluded that oregano oil may be a good alternative treatment for Candida yeast infections. However, more research is needed (17Trusted Source).
Summary In test-tube studies, oregano oil has been shown to be effective against the most common form of yeast, Candida.
5. May Improve Gut Health
Oregano may benefit gut health in a number of ways.
Gut symptoms such as diarrhea, pain and bloating are common and can be caused by gut parasites.
One study gave 600 mg of oregano oil to 14 people who had gut symptoms as a result of a parasite. After daily treatment for six weeks, all participants experienced a reduction in parasites, and 77% were completely cured.
Participants also experienced a reduction in gut symptoms and tiredness associated with the symptoms (18Trusted Source).
Oregano oil may also help protect against another common gut complaint known as "leaky gut." This happens when the gut wall becomes damaged, allowing bacteria and toxins to pass into the bloodstream.
In a study on pigs, oregano oil protected the gut wall from damage and prevented it from becoming "leaky." It also reduced the number of E. coli bacteria in the gut (19Trusted Source).
Summary Oregano oil may benefit gut health by killing gut parasites and protecting against a leaky gut.
6. May Have Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Inflammation in the body is linked to a number of adverse health effects.
Research has shown that oregano oil may reduce inflammation.
One study found that oregano oil, along with thyme oil, reduced inflammatory markers in the blood in mice that had artificially induced colitis (20Trusted Source).
Carvacrol, one of the key components in oregano oil, has also been linked to reducing inflammation.
One study directly applied different concentrations of carvacrol to the swollen paws or ears of mice. Carvacrol reduced paw swelling by 35–61% and ear swelling by 33–43% (21Trusted Source).
Summary Oregano oil may help reduce inflammation in mice, though human studies are needed.
7. Could Help Relieve Pain
Oregano oil has been investigated for its painkilling properties.
One study in mice tested standard painkillers and essential oils, including oregano oil, for their capacity to relieve pain.
It found that oregano oil significantly reduced pain in mice, with effects similar to the commonly used painkillers fenoprofen and morphine.
The research proposed these results were likely due to the carvacrol content of oregano oil (22).
A similar study found that oregano oil not only reduced pain in rats, but that the response was dose-dependent. That is, the more oregano oil the rats consumed, the less pain they appeared to feel (23Trusted Source).
Summary Oregano oil may significantly reduce pain in mice and rats, having similar pain-relieving effects as some commonly used medications.
8. May Have Cancer-Fighting Properties
A few studies have indicated that carvacrol, one of the compounds of oregano oil, may have cancer-fighting properties.
In studies on cancer cells in test tubes, carvacrol has demonstrated promising results against lung, liver and breast cancer cells.
It has been found to inhibit cell growth and cause cancer cell death (24Trusted Source, 25Trusted Source, 26Trusted Source).
Although this is promising research, there have not been any studies carried out on people, so more research is needed.
Summary Preliminary studies have shown that the most abundant compound in oregano oil, carvacrol, inhibits cancer cell growth and causes cell death in lung, liver and breast cancer cells.
9. May Help You Lose Weight
Thanks to oregano oil's carvacrol content, it may help with weight loss.
In one study, mice were either fed a normal diet, a high-fat diet or a high-fat diet with carvacrol. Those given carvacrol alongside their high-fat diet gained significantly less weight and body fat compared to those just given a high-fat diet.
Furthermore, carvacrol appeared to reverse the chain of events that can lead to the formation of fat cells (27Trusted Source).
More research is needed to demonstrate that oregano oil has a role in weight loss, but it may be worth trying as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.
Summary Oregano oil may be beneficial for weight loss through the action of carvacrol, though human studies are needed.
How to Use Oregano Oil
Oregano oil is available as bottled liquid oil or in capsule form. It can be bought from most health food shops or online.
It is usually cheaper as an oil than in capsule form, though capsules can be useful if you do not like the taste of oregano.
Because the strengths of the oils and capsules vary, it's important to read the directions on the individual packet for instructions on how to use the product.
It can be applied to the skin or taken by mouth, depending on the condition being treated. However, the oil must always be diluted.
There is no documented standard effective dose of oregano oil, but here is a guide for how to use it:
• On the skin: For skin conditions or infections, dilute with olive oil at a concentration of 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of olive oil per drop of oregano oil, then apply to the affected area.
• Under the tongue: Dilute with olive oil at a ratio of one drop of oregano oil to one drop of olive oil. Place 1–3 drops of this dilution under the tongue, hold it there for a few minutes, then flush with water.
• Swallowed: If you're taking the oregano oil orally, you can put a few drops of it into a cup (237 ml) of water, gargle and then swallow.
If you're interested in taking oregano oil, but you're currently taking prescription medications, make sure to consult your doctor before you start.
In addition, oregano oil is not generally recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Summary Oregano oil is available as a liquid or in capsule form. It can be applied directly to an area, dropped under the tongue or swallowed, but must always be diluted before use.
The Bottom Line

What Is the Budwig Diet?
The Budwig Diet is a natural approach to preventing and helping to treat cancer and other diseases. The Budwig Diet Protocol was first developed in the 1950s by a German biochemist named Dr. Johanna Budwig. Dr. Budwig was a seven-time Nobel peace prize nominee and considered an expert on the topic of fats and lipids.
Today at the Budwig Center Clinic, programs are based on “the protocol and natural cancer treatments endorsed by Dr. Johanna Budwig…they combine the Budwig diet and natural medicine to treat cancer and other chronic diseases.” Although the Budwig Protocol can be used as an alternative to traditional treatment, it’s recommended that it’s utilized as a compliment to other medical treatment approaches.
What foods can you eat on the Budwig diet? The Budwig Diet emphasizes healthy fats, high antioxidant foods such as fresh vegetables, and fermented dairy products that provide probiotics. Foods used in the Budwig Diet recipe (explained below) include cottage cheese or yogurt, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil. For this reason, the diet is sometimes called the Flax Oil and Cottage Cheese (FOCC) diet or just the Flaxseed Oil Diet. For even more protective effects, I recommend adding additional anti-inflammatory ingredients to the Budwig Diet recipe, specifically turmeric and black pepper.
According to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, “The Budwig Diet has not been proven to treat or prevent cancer.” (1) It has not been “proven” because no large-scale clinical studies have been conducted using the Budwig diet protocol. However there’s lots of evidence showing that the foods used in the Budwig Diet provide many health benefits, including reducing inflammation and supporting cellular regeneration. (2) In layman’s term, this means the protocol helps recharge your body’s “dead batteries” by helping your cells to work properly. The Budwig Protocol has been associated with some of the following health benefits:
• Help supporting cancer recovery
• Reducing inflammation and related conditions like diabetes
• Improving neurological function
• Improving circulation and helping to heal heart disease
• Healing inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis
• Reducing arthritis symptoms
• Balancing hormones
How long does it take for Budwig Diet to work? Again, because there have not been clinical studies done to investigate the effects of the Budwig Diet plan, it’s hard to say exactly how long it will take for you to experience improvements in your health. If you’re consistently following the protocol you can probably expect to start experiencing benefits within a few months, based on the fact that it takes this long for changes to your diet to make a noticeable impact.
The Budwig Diet Protocol
The Budwig Diet Protocol consists of eating multiple daily servings of the Budwig Diet recipe (which includes flaxseed oil and cottage cheese) in addition to increasing intake of vegetables, fruits and fresh juices. Here are steps you can take to implement the protocol: (3)
1. First, STOP consuming processed fats like refined vegetable oils (such as safflower, canola, corn and sunflower oil), added sugar, refined wheat flour, conventional meat, and GMOs found in many packaged and processed foods.
2. Second, START consuming healthy unsaturated fatty acids, along with saturated fatty acids from quality sources, in order to repair damaged cell membranes. Omega-3 fatty acids are especially important for reducing inflammation.
3. Consume the Budwig Recipe daily for the best results.
4. Make other dietary and lifestyle changes that support overall health. This includes increasing vegetable and fruit consumption and choosing high-quality animal products for protein — for example, free range organic chicken, pastured eggs and wild-caught fish (like salmon, sardines, trout, halibut and tuna, all foods that provide omega-3s).
Dr. Budwig found that the health of your cells can quickly be reversed by consuming a daily mixture of cottage cheese (or quark, or similar dairy products), flaxseeds, and flaxseed oil. Dr. Budwig also discovered this method wasn’t just effective for helping to prevent or treat cancer, but also in healing heart disease, diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, arthritis, hormone imbalance, and neurological conditions.
In addition to consuming the Budwig protocol meal explained below, Dr. Budwig also recommended making other dietary and lifestyle changes to help increase protection against cancer and other diseases. These lifestyle changes (described in more detail later in this article) include increasing vitamin D levels through sun exposure and consuming fresh vegetable juices packed with antioxidants.
For protection against chronic disease, I recommend using principles of the Budwig Diet Protocol along with the Gerson Diet. What is the Gerson Diet (also called Gerson Therapy)? It’s another natural approach to helping prevent and treat cancer, created by Dr. Max Gerson, a German-born American medical doctor. Gerson therapy involves consuming lots of organic, plant-based foods, raw juices, beef liver and organ meats, supplements and using coffee enemas. It can help support colon health, improve detoxification, and help reverse nutrient deficiencies. The diet is low in fats, proteins and sodium but very high in antioxidants, vitamins and electrolytes, due to including up to 13 glasses of freshly prepared juice daily along with other plant-based foods.
The Budwig Recipe
The original Budwig Diet recipe provides many valuable nutrients; however, in my opinion you can reap even more benefits from including additional superfood ingredients. My “Beyond Budwig Recipe” includes the following ingredients: (4)
• 6 ounces of cultured dairy, such as organic cottage cheese, goat’s milk kefir, or amasai. I recommend checking your local farmers’ market and trying to find raw dairy products, if possible.
• 4 tablespoons of sprouted and ground chia or flax seeds. You can use whole seeds that you grind yourself, pre-ground seed meal, or seed powder. (DO NOT include chia or flax seed if you have colorectal cancer or a colostomy.)
• 1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
• 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl or blender and consume one time or more daily. Consuming this meal one time daily can help rebuild your cell membranes and is also an incredible colon cleanse. It is loaded with probiotics and fermentable fiber that can transform the health of your small intestine and colon. However, note that if you have colon or colorectal cancer or if you’ve had a colostomy, DO NOT include the chia and flaxseeds. (5)
*Note — If you simply cannot consume this healthy form of dairy because of a food sensitivity, I suggest replacing the kefir with unsweetened coconut yogurt or 3oz full-fat canned coconut milk.
7 Budwig Diet Benefits
1. Helps Improve Cellular Health
In 1952 Dr. Johanna Budwig was the German Government’s Senior Expert on lipids and pharmacology and was considered one of the world’s leading authorities on the benefits of healthy fats and oils. While doing her research, she discovered that many of the conventional processed fats and hydrogenated oils used in the modern food supply were destroying the membranes of our cells, in turn contributing to inflammation, disease and toxicity. Part of Dr. Budwig’s hypothesis regarding the formation of diseases like cancer was that disease resulted from reduced uptake of oxygen by cell membranes. According to her theory, one of the reasons that cells struggle to take up oxygen is because of too little omega-3 fatty acids.
Your body is made up of approximately 75 trillion cells. Your cells have a nucleus that has a positive charge and on the outside has electrons that are negatively charged. The modern processing of fats can contribute to destruction of cell membranes, stopping electrical signals within your cells from working properly. If you can imagine a car with a dead battery, this is basically what is happening inside your damaged cells! Eating healthy fats, including omega-3s and saturated fats, supports cellular membranes, which is foundational when it comes to overall health.
2. Improves Circulation & Supports Heart Health
Most of us are aware how bad fats can block our arteries, but bad fats also create problems throughout the entire body, leading to cell congestion and inflammation. When cells become damaged fats are no longer able to pass through capillaries properly, causing circulatory (blood flow) problems and raising the risk for cardiovascular disease. This is one reason why many studies have found that consumption of healthy fats, especially omega-3s, supports normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduces risk for heart disease.
Studies have found that omega-3 fatty acids help modify the production of eicosanoids by reducing thromboxane A2 and leukotriene B4, resulting in reduced inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3s has been shown to help reduce vascular atherogenic inflammation, to improve endothelial function, and to decrease resting systolic and diastolic blood pressure. (6)
3. Supports Cognitive Health
Your brain and nervous system help control the function of your entire body, and about 60 percent of your nervous system is made up of fat. Your body produces over 500 million new cells a day, which require a steady supply of fatty acids.
Every cell and organ in your entire body requires fat in order to function properly. When conventionally processed fats and hydrogenated oils shut down your cells’ electrical power, your cognitive health suffers. Diets that are too low in healthy fats, omega-3s/polyunsaturated fatty acids, have been linked to a higher risk for cognitive disorders including dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have found that omega-3s have neuroprotective effects including helping with early brain development, supporting learning and memory, improving regulation of neuronal membrane excitability, improving capacity for neuronal transmission, and reducing oxidative damage. (7)
4. Cultured Dairy Provides Nutrients & Probiotics
Cottage cheese is rich in sulfur protein, healthy saturated fats, and essential nutrients like B vitamins, phosphorus, selenium and calcium. There are additional benefits associated with cultured/fermented dairy products because they provide beneficial probiotic bacteria that help improve gut health. Studies suggest that probiotics found in cultured dairy can help to restore intestinal homeostasis and maintain balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory responses of intestinal immunocytes. (8) Yogurt in particular has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and to help people suffering from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). (9)
When cultured dairy and flax are combined together it makes the fats in both foods more soluble, so they can be absorbed into the cell membrane more easily. Kefir (from goat’s milk), organic cottage cheese, amasai (from A2 cow’s milk), or yogurt (sheep or goat’s milk) are the best dairy products to purchase, if possible. Make sure these products are low-temp processed or raw and that they are organic and come from grass-fed animals.
5. Sprouted Super Seeds Provide Fiber
Chia seeds and flax seeds are two of the most nutrient dense seeds in the world. Both have incredible health benefits, but they are best when consumed sprouted since this helps make their nutrients most available.
Some of the benefits associated with chia and flax seeds include:
• decreased constipation
• improved skin moisture
• improved hormonal balance
• protection against heart disease
• increased protection against cancer
Flax seeds, used in the Budwig Diet, contain lignans, α-linolenic acid, fiber, protein and components that may possess phytogestrogenic, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-modulating effects.
Studies have found that flax seeds can help to fight cancer by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting growth of cancerous cells, including breast and colon cancer cells. (10) A study conducted by the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto found evidence that flax is associated with decreased risk of developing breast cancer and also a reduced risk of mortality among those already living with breast cancer. (11)
6. Cold-Pressed Flaxseed Oil Provides Omega-3s
Flaxseed oil contains the type of polyunsaturated fatty acids called omega-3s, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and offer protection against many diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. A number of studies have found evidence that omega-3s found in flaxseeds can also cause anticancer effects, including inhibiting or halting the development of a tumor. (12) Additionally, omega-3 have been shown to increase tolerability of conventional cancer chemotherapy, to help with adenoma (polyp) prevention, and to lower the risk for cancer recurrence.
Furthermore, flaxseed oil has been shown to decrease levels of proinflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha and Interleukin-1 beta, suggesting it supports the immune system and reduces the risk for various inflammatory conditions. (13)
7. Turmeric and Black Pepper Fight Inflammation
Today there is more research focused on the cancer-fighting benefits associated with turmeric (specifically curcumin, the active ingredient found in turmeric) than any other herb in the world. (14) Turmeric/curcumin has been shown to help decrease tumor size and help fight colon and breast cancer. Adding a pinch of black pepper is recommended because this can increase turmeric’s absorption.
A Note About Dairy
While the Budwig Protocol can be very helpful for defending against “Western diseases,” given our food supply today, we run into a problem. Most conventional/store-bought cottage cheese isn’t as good as it was back in 1952 in Germany. There are three major problems with most dairy products sold in major grocery stores today:
1. Ultra High Temperature Pasteurization (280 F) — Pasteurization is used to kill bacteria, but such high heat can also damage many of the vital nutrients found in dairy milk, including proteins and probiotics.
2. Chemicals — Most dairy today is made from cows that have been treated with hormones, antibiotics, and pain killers, plus given GMO food that contains pesticide residue.
3. A1 Casein — There are two types of protein in milk, casein and whey. In the last 1,000 years there has been a genetic mutation in some dairy cows that has caused them to produce an irregular type of protein called beta-casein A1. A1 casein is a protein that for some people can be highly inflammatory, similar to gluten. This type of protein isn’t found in certain cattle and is never found in human, goats, sheep, buffalo, and A2 cows (to learn more about this topic, I recommend reading “Devil in the Milk”).
To overcome these obstacles when shopping for dairy, ideally look to buy organic cottage cheese, goat’s milk kefir, raw milk yogurt or amasai from A2 cows.
Additional Lifestyle & Diet Strategies
In addition to consuming the Budwig Diet recipe above, other strategies that are part of the complete protocol include:
1. Juicing Vegetables — Juicing can give you a large, concentrated dose of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants from plant foods that may help support the body in cancer recovery.
2. Frankincense Essential Oil — Frankincense oil was recommended by Dr. Budwig for helping to fight formation of brain tumors. Rub this essential oil on your body (neck area) three times daily or take 3 drops internally three times daily. To be safe, avoid using oils that are not 100 percent pure, especially if taking them internally.
3. Sunshine Therapy — Getting 30 minutes of direct sunlight exposure daily can increase low vitamin D3 levels, which can help support immune function and potentially increase protection against chronic diseases.
Precautions Regarding the Budwig Diet Protocol
While it can support you during recovery from a disease such as cancer, the Budwig Diet should still not be used in place of standard medical treatment or care. Never avoid visiting a doctor if you’ve been diagnosed with a chronic health problem as this can be very risky and even life-threatening.
• It’s not recommended that you follow the Budwig Diet protocol immediately following, or if you have an existing bleeding disorder, due to how flaxseed can cause thinning of the blood and risk for bleeding.
• You should also not start the Budwig protocol if you are pregnant or nursing, since it may result in under-eating or nutrient deficiencies.
Potential Budwig Diet Protocol side effects can include:
• changes in digestion function, such as increased gas, bloating, constipation, stomach aches and frequent bowel movements (usually initially while you get used to eating the recipe)
• potential for increased bleeding
• possible GI issues if you are intolerant to dairy

What Are the Fruit of the Spirit?
The Greek word translated “fruit” refers to the natural product of a living thing. Paul used “fruit” to help us understand the product of the Holy Spirit, who lives inside every believer. The fruit of the Spirit is produced by the Spirit, not by the Christian. The Greek word is singular, showing that “fruit” is a unified whole, not independent characteristics. As we grow, all the characteristics of Christ will be manifested in our lives.
Yet, like physical fruit needs time to grow, the fruit of the Spirit will not ripen in our lives overnight. Like a successful gardener must battle against weeds to enjoy the sweet fruit they desire, we must constantly work to rid our lives of the “weeds” of our old sin natures that want to choke out the work of the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit gives us the power we need to reject those old sinful desires. We can say “no” to sin and accept the “way out” God faithfully provides (1 Corinthians 10:13) by following the Holy Spirit’s leading.
As we give the Spirit more control of our lives, He begins to do in and through us what only He can do - to shape us and grow us to look like Jesus (2 Corinthians 3:17-18).
Since God’s goal for all His children is for us to be like Jesus (Romans 8:29), the Holy Spirit constantly works to rid our lives of the “acts of the sinful nature” (Gal 5:19) and display His fruit instead. Therefore, the presence of the “fruit of the Spirit” is evidence that our character is becoming more like Christ’s.
Paul uses 9 characteristics to describe the fruit of the Spirit in the book of Galatians.
True, biblical love is a choice, not a feeling. It deliberately expresses itself in loving ways and always seeks the welfare of others. Biblical love is dependent on the giver’s character, not emotion. For instance, a mature believer demonstrating love will not exercise his or her freedom if that action might harm another Christian in some way. Rather than risking the possibility of causing the immature Christian to question and stumble, the mature believer will not exercise his freedom out of love for his brother (Romans 14:1-15). Love chooses to set aside one’s own preferences, desires, and sometimes even needs to put the other person first (Philippians 2:1-3).
Sometimes we Christians tend to downplay the meaning of joy. But, the Greek word translated as “joy” in Galatians 5 means “gladness and delight” – basically the same thing the world means when it talks about joy. It is a feeling of gladness based on our circumstances. Sadly, the world’s joy cannot last because it is based on fleeting, physical circumstances. But the joy of the Lord is established in our spiritual, eternal circumstances. As we cling tight to Jesus, abiding daily in our saving relationship with Him, we will experience the fullness of joy He promised (John 15:4-11).
The world doesn’t offer much peace. Just look around. The world cannot give it because the world doesn’t know the One who is peace. But for those who have the Spirit of peace within us, the peace of Christ is possible, no matter our circumstances (John 14:27). We can reject the chaos of the world and embrace God’s peace. The book of Philippians tells us how (Philippians 4:4-9). First, choose to rejoice in God and who He is. Second, bring all your worries, fears, and concerns to God in prayer. Third, fill your mind with God’s truth. And fourth, choose to think about the things of God.
We don’t see much patience in the world today, not even in the church. Maybe part of the reason is our fast-paced, want-it-now culture. But Christians have everything we need to be patient because we have the Holy Spirit living in us longing to display His character to those around us. Patient people put up with circumstances and other people, even when severely tried. Patient people display endurance, longsuffering, and perseverance. The New Testament also specifically connects patience with sharing the Gospel. God is patient as He waits for the lost to come to Him (2 Peter 3:9) and He calls His people to be patient as we extend the offer of salvation in Christ to others (2 Peter 1:1-8).
Kindness and Goodness
The characteristics of “kindness” and “goodness” are closely related. Together they present the picture of one who not only possesses moral goodness and integrity, but also generously expresses it in the way they act toward others. This “goodness in action” reflects God’s kindness and goodness toward us. God demonstrated His kindness and goodness to us in our salvation (Titus 3:4) and will continue to “show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us” for all eternity (Ephesians 2:7)!
To be “faithful” is to be reliable or trustworthy. For the Christian, this is faithfulness specifically to the Savior who redeemed us. Christian faithfulness therefore, is continued and consistent submission and obedience to the same Spirit who provides the ability for us to be faithful. This attitude is in direct contrast to our previous “faithfulness” to our own sinful desires and ways. The word also describes someone willing to suffer persecution and even death for Christ’s sake. “Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring." (2 Thessalonians 1:4)
Closely linked to humility, gentleness is grace of the soul. It is not weakness, but instead it is strength under control. For instance, in Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he wrote that the “Lord’s servant” will “correct his opponents with gentleness” (2 Timothy 2:25). And in Paul’s letter to the church in Galatia, he wrote that those who have been caught in sin should be restored in a “spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1). Gentleness, being the opposite of self-assertiveness and self-interest, is also a key ingredient in unity and peace within the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:2).
The last characteristic in Paul’s description of the fruit of the Spirit points us back to his list of the “works of the flesh” in Galatians 5:19-21. Those of us with the indwelling Holy Spirit has the strength to control our sinful desires, to say “no” to our flesh. Self-control gives us the power to say “yes” to the Spirit and foster a beautiful, bountiful harvest of spiritual fruit!

What Are Essential Oils?
They're made from parts of certain plants like leaves, herbs, barks, and rinds. Makers use different methods to concentrate them into oils. You may add them to vegetable oils, creams, or bath gels. Or you might smell them, rub them on your skin, or put them in your bath. Some research shows that they can be helpful, if you know how to use them the right way. Always check the label and ask your doctor if you’re not sure if they’re OK for you to use.
DO Try It if You’re Anxious
Simple smells such as lavender, chamomile, and rosewater may help keep you calm. You can breathe in or rub diluted versions of these oils on your skin. Scientists think they work by sending chemical messages to parts of the brain that affect mood and emotion. Although these scents alone won’t take all your stress away, the aroma may help you relax.
DON’T Just Rub Them Anywhere
Oils that are fine on your arms and legs may not be safe to put inside your mouth, nose, eyes, or private parts. Lemongrass, peppermint, and cinnamon bark are some examples.
DO Check the Quality
Look for a trusted producer that makes pure oils without anything added. You’re more likely to have an allergic reaction to oils that have other ingredients. Not all extras are bad. Some added vegetable oil may be normal for certain more expensive essential oils.
DON’T Trust Buzzwords
Just because it’s from a plant doesn’t mean it’s safe to rub on your skin, or breathe, or eat, even if it’s “pure.” Natural substances can be irritating, toxic, or cause allergic reactions. Like anything else you put on your skin, it’s best to test a little bit on a small area and see how your skin responds.
DO Toss Out Older Oils In general, don’t keep them more than 3 years. Older oils are more likely to be spoiled because of exposure to oxygen. They may not work as well and could irritate your skin or cause an allergic reaction. If you see a big change in the way an oil looks, feels, or smells, you should throw it out, because it has probably spoiled.
DON’T Put Edible Oils On Your Skin
Cumin oil, which is safe to use in your food, can cause blisters if you put it on your skin. Citrus oils that are safe in your food may be bad for your skin, especially if you go out into the sun. And the opposite is true, too. Eucalyptus or sage oil may soothe you if you rub it on your skin or breathe it in. But swallowing them could can cause a serious complication, like a seizure.
DO Tell Your Doctor
Your doctor can make sure it’s safe for you and rule out any side effects, like affecting your prescriptions. For example, peppermint and eucalyptus oils may change how your body absorbs the cancer drug 5-fluorouracil from the skin. Or an allergic reaction may cause rashes, hives, or breathing problems.
DO Dilute Them
Undiluted oils are too strong to use straight. You’ll need to dilute them, usually with vegetable oils or creams or bath gels, to a solution that only has a little bit -- 1% to 5% -- of the essential oil. Exactly how much can vary. The higher the percentage, the more likely you are to have a reaction, so it’s important to mix them correctly.
DON’T Use On Damaged Skin
Injured or inflamed skin will absorb more oil and may cause unwanted skin reactions. Undiluted oils, which you shouldn’t use at all, can be downright dangerous on damaged skin.
DO Consider Age
Young children and the elderly may be more sensitive to essential oils. So you may need to dilute them more. And you should totally avoid some oils, like birch and wintergreen. In even small amounts, those may cause serious problems in kids 6 or younger because they contain a chemical called methyl salicylate. Don’t use essential oils on a baby unless your pediatrician says it’s OK.
DON’T Forget to Store Them Safely
They can be very concentrated and may cause serious health problems, especially if used at the wrong dose or in the wrong way. Just like anything else that little hands shouldn’t be able to reach, don't make your essential oils too handy. If you have young children, keep all essential oils locked away out of their sight and reach.
DO Stop Use if Your Skin Reacts
Your skin might love essential oils. But if it doesn’t -- and you notice a rash, little bumps, boils, or just itchy skin -- take a break. More of the same oil can make it worse. Whether you mixed it yourself or it’s an ingredient in a ready-made cream, oil, or aromatherapy product, gently wash it off with water.
DO Choose Your Therapist Carefully
If you look for a professional aromatherapist, do your homework. By law, they don’t have to have training or a license. But you can check to see if yours went to a school certified by a professional organizations like National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.
It More of a good thing is not always good. Even when diluted, an essential oil can cause a bad reaction if you use too much or use it too often. That’s true even if you’re not allergic or unusually sensitive to them.
DON’T Be Afraid to Try Them
Used the right way, they can help you feel better with few side effects. For example, you may feel less nauseated from chemotherapy cancer treatment if you breathe in ginger vapors. You may be able to fight certain bacterial or fungal infections, including the dangerous MRSA bacteria, with tea tree oil. In one study, tea tree oil was as effective as a prescription antifungal cream in easing symptoms of a fungal foot infection.
DO Take Care if Pregnant
Some essential massage oils may make their way into the placenta, an organ in your uterus that grows along with your baby and helps to nourish it. It’s not clear if this causes any problems, unless you take toxic amounts, but to be safe, it’s best to avoid certain oils if you’re pregnant. Those include wormwood, rue, oak moss, Lavandula stoechas, camphor, parsley seed, sage, and hyssop. Ask your doctor if you’re unsure.

'He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.'
Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.

Dear Heavenly Father in your precious son’s name Jesus,
I come before you and just want to say thank you for your beautiful presence in my life and all the ones I love.
I am totally dependent on you to continue to develop in me the fruit of the Spirit as I abide on the vine and grow and evolve nurtured by you and the great comforter Holy Spirit.
You have pulled me from the earth like a precious gemstone all dirty, rough, broken, misshapen, neglected, seemingly forgotten.
As you have cleaned me up and polished me and knocked off the rough edges to make me a new creature in Christ Jesus to develop in me the fruit of the Spirit of Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness and Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Meekness, and above all the Self-Control to live this new life in you.
I am eternally grateful that you loved me so much and saw in me something I never could see.
You knew I could be a precious Jewel in your Crown to Brilliantly Glow and Shine with the Fruit of the Spirit and the New Life in Christ you created for me to be.
So, Father and Jesus and Holy Spirit I want to ask today that you would continue to develop me to be everything you originally designed me to be.
To continue to reveal to me this great Kingdom of Heaven Jesus came preaching about, this new way of living as a believer, trusting in you for everything in my life, you are the very air I breath, you are the very hope I have, you are the very Faith I cling to. I invite this beautiful abundant life to come and teach me how to live for Jesus everyday more and more.
To share this good news with everyone I meet and let them know how awesome, and powerful and loving and kind you are. Your mercies are new every morning and your favor and Grace will help me to finish this journey called life.

The book of Revelation has incredible promises that are associated with overcomers. This prayer condenses all of these promises into one place to allow you to lay hold of all that God has set aside for his overcomers!
Father, I come before you in prayer in the mighty name of Jesus.
My declaration is that I choose to be an overcomer in Christ. I surrender myself to the journey you have set aside for me and I choose to press into the mark of the prize which is the high calling in Jesus Christ.
I declare that as a result of my life and response to your commands it will be said to me, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”.
I choose to partake of the promises associated with being an overcomer and I speak them over my life. Along with the overcomers from the church of Ephesus, it will be given to me to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.
Along with the overcomers from the church of Smyrna, I will not be hurt by the second death. Along with the overcomers from the church of Pergamos, it will be given to me to eat of the hidden manna.
I receive a white stone and on the stone a new name which no one knows but the one who receives it. Along with the overcomers from the church of Thyatira, I will be given power over the nations. With Jesus, I will rule them with a rod of iron, they shall be dashed to pieces like a potter’s vessel. I also receive the morning star.
Along with the overcomers from the church of Sardis, I will retain garments that are not defiled. I will walk worthy with you Lord, in white garments. My name will not be blotted out of the book of Life and you, Lord Jesus, will confess my name before the Father and his angels. Along with the overcomers from the church of Philadelphia, I will be made a pillar in the temple of God and shall go out no more.
Upon me will be written the name of My God, the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down from heaven from My God. Upon me Jesus will also write his new name. How to Reverse Cavities Naturally & Heal Tooth Decay

There is a common belief today about cavities that once you have tooth decay, that cavity can NOT be reversed. Then the only solution to oral wellness is to have part of your tooth drilled out and filled with a synthetic material. However, it’s been proven that there are ways to reverse cavities naturally.
In fact, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal, cavities and tooth decay could potentially be reversed with diet. (1)
A study was performed on 62 children with cavities, and they were divided into three different diet groups. Group 1 ate a standard diet plus oatmeal (rich in phytic acid). Group 2 consumed a normal diet and supplemented with vitamin D. Group 3 ate a grain-free diet and took vitamin D.
The results found that Group 1 who had a diet high in grains and phytic acid had an increase in cavities. Group 2 had improvements in cavities and less form. Group 3, who followed a grain-free diet with nutrient-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, meat, milk and took vitamin D, saw the greatest improvements — nearly all cavities were healed. (2)
This study, along with the backing of many doctors and dentists, proves we have been misinformed about what causes cavities and how to reverse cavities naturally.
Dental health advocate Ramiel Nagel, who authored the book “Cure Tooth Decay,” encouraged many of his readers to “reverse” their tooth decay and avoid dangerous amalgam fillings. He believed that you can prevent cavities with nutrient-rich foods.
In this article, I am going to go over the causes of tooth decay and how it may be prevented and in many cases even reversed.
The Cause of Tooth Decay
To understand the link between diet and oral wellness, we must start with one of the most well-respected dentists who ever lived, Weston A. Price.
West A. Price lived in the early 1900s and was the chairman of the National Dental Association (1914–1923) and a pioneer for the American Dental Association (ADA).
Weston Price traveled the world searching to discover what causes tooth decay. Dr. Price found a common link between eating modern foods and cavities. He witnessed that many indigenous isolated tribes had perfect teeth and little tooth decay. But once they were exposed to a Western diet, they experienced tooth decay, bone loss and chronic illness.
According to the ADA, this is the cause of tooth decay:
“[Tooth decay] occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, pop, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel, resulting in tooth decay.”
But the truth is the ADA is only hitting on one of the four things that can contribute to tooth decay.
According to the insights of Dr. Edward Mellanby, Dr. Weston Price and Ramiel Nagel, there are four main things that contribute to tooth decay: (3)
1. Lack of minerals in the diet (calcium deficiency, magnesium deficiency and phosphorus deficiency)
2. Lack of fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K, especially vitamin D deficiency)
3. Too much consumption of phytic acid-rich foods
4. Too much consumption of processed sugar
Let’s discuss the four aspects that cause tooth decay and how they can be addressed with diet, along with ways to reverse cavities naturally.
How to Reverse Cavities Naturally
Don’t be fooled, in addition to brushing and flossing daily, there are several ways you can reverse cavities naturally and maximize your oral health without resorting to taking in fluoride. Here are just a few ways to reverse cavities naturally for you to consider, while also avoiding fluoride:
1. Remove Sugar
Probably the worst culprit of them all for anyone who desires healthy, cavity-free teeth, sugar should be avoided like the plague. So kick that sugar addiction stat. Not only does sugar feed oral bacteria that prevents a healthy flow of dental fluids, but it’s highly acidic and can literally decalcify or demineralize the structural content of teeth that create dental decay. This means staying away from soda, candy and baked goods with sugar. Additionally, use raw honey and maple syrup, and drink juices sparingly, as too much sugar can contribute to cavity formation. Be careful of artificial sweeteners because of their health risks as well. Bottom line: Make stevia your new best friend along with raw honey in moderation!
2. Eliminate Phytic Acid
Phytic acid (phytate) is a mineral blocker and enzyme inhibitor found in grains, nuts, seeds and beans that can cause serious health problems in our diets. The main reason phytic acid has become an issue today is because we have stopped ancient food preparation techniques, such as sprouting or sourdough fermentation, which kills off the phytic acid.
According to research published in the The Lancet, a diet high in phytic acid creates mineral deficiencies and causes osteoporosis. About 80 percent of phosphorus in grains and beans is bound to phytic acid so it’s completely unabsorbable. In addition to blocking phosphorus availability in humans, these molecules bind minerals necessary for oral health, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc — thus causing them to be unavailable for proper utilization. Consuming foods high in phytic acid decreases magnesium absorption by 60 percent and zinc by 20 percent. (5)
Phytic acid not only prevents you from absorbing minerals in your food, but it also leaches minerals out of your body, bones and teeth! (6)
Subsequently, the powerful anti-nutritional effects of phytic acid have been known to cause digestive disorders, lack of appetite, nutrient deficiencies and tooth decay. A good rule of thumb is to limit your grain consumption and stay completely clear from unfermented soy products. (7)
Because phytic acid is much higher in foods grown using modern high-phosphate fertilizers than those grown in natural compost, try to only eat foods that are organic and GMO-free. If you’re aiming to improve your health and reverse cavities naturally, foods high in phytic acid like grains, beans, nuts and soy should be avoided. However, if you soak grains or nuts and then sprout them or do sourdough fermentation, you can reduce phytic acid by around 50 percent to 100 percent. (8)
3. Consume Raw Dairy and Nutrient-Rich Foods
Raw dairy is filled with the vitamins and minerals that contribute to a healthy dental fluid flow and help maintain strong teeth and promote oral wellness. Thus, it’s a great way to get cavity-free teeth. Loaded with calcium, vitamin K2, vitamin D3, magnesium, phosphorus and fat-soluble vitamins, it’s a good idea to consume raw dairy products at least weekly. I recommend goat milk kefir, raw cheeses and organic grass-fed butter as great options.
Remember, if you’re going to beat tooth decay, you need to increase your fat-soluble vitamin intake and mineral intake. If I were creating an ideal diet to follow, it would look like this:
• Rich in animal foods like bone broth, meat, fish and eggs.
• Raw and cooked vegetables, especially green leafy vegetables.
• Raw dairy like kefir, cheese and grass-fed butter.
• Fruit, one piece daily early in day.
• Vitamin D — get plenty of sunshine, and days not in sun supplement with 5,000IU daily of D3.
• Foods high in healthy fats like coconut oil, avocado, olives, and fish or fermented cod liver oil.
• Fermented grains only and in moderation, such as true sourdough bread (or even better no grains at all). You can buy raw flours and breads.
• Nuts, seeds and beans only that have been sprouted.
• Finally, NO processed foods, packaged foods or fast food.
4. Use Mineralizing Toothpaste
First of all, I know it can get expensive, but there are several brands of fluoride-free toothpaste that you won’t have to pay a small fortune to get your hands on. Second, if you’re looking to save a buck or two and also want to remineralize your teeth in a particularly powerful way, try making your own Homemade Remineralizing Toothpaste:
• 4 tablespoons coconut oil
• 2 tablespoons baking soda (aluminum-free)
• 1 tablespoon xylitol or 1/8 teaspoon stevia
• 20 drops peppermint or clove essential oil
• 20 drops trace minerals or (calcium/magnesium powder)
5. Try Oil Pulling
Used for centuries by Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that has gained some popularity in the U.S. the last several years. Simply done by swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes, this simple oral detoxification procedure has been praised to cure everything from gingivitis to headaches to systemic diseases like diabetes.
If you can’t do 20 minutes, three to five minutes is still good. I recommend using coconut oil or MCT oil and a drop or two of clove and/or tea tree essential oils for maximal antiseptic and antifungal power. Here are some tips:
• The best time to oil pull (like most other detoxification procedures) is first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed.
• Don’t let the 20-minute time frame deter you. You won’t even notice 20 minutes have gone by if you do this during your normal morning routine (i.e., while you shower, put your clothes on and prep for the day).
• I then recommend that you spit the spent oil in the trash rather than into the sink, as an accumulation of oil could pose problems for household plumbing down the road.
• Immediately afterward, rinse your mouth out with warm water. Use salt water for added antimicrobial properties.
• Don’t be shocked if the oil/saliva mixture you spit out is milky white or yellow.
• Finally, brush your teeth as normal.
Note: This should be a relatively relaxing process, so don’t feel compelled to vigorously swish your mouth with oil for the entire time or else you’re bound to get sore jaw muscles. Simply and gently move the oil in your mouth and through your teeth without swallowing any of it.

Last year senior Monsanto scientist Dan Goldstein attempted to quell fears over the mega company’s chemical pesticide RoundUp poisoning people’s bodies over time. He said, “It is a common misunderstanding that pesticides, in general, accumulate in body fat. While this phenomenon may occur with some older compounds…pesticides that bio-accumulate to any significant degree have been removed from use or are highly restricted.”
But after Reuters reported this week that tests found residues of the active RoundUp herbicide glyphosate in an astounding 41 of 69 honey samples, 10 of 28 samples of soy sauce, three of 18 breast milk samples and six of 40 infant formula samples, Monsanto is singing a different tune.
“According to physicians and other food safety experts, the mere presence of a chemical itself is not a human health hazard. It is the amount, or dose, that matters,” said Monsanto senior toxicologist Kimberly Hodge-Bell.
Dr. Don Huber, professor emeritus of plant pathology at Purdue University warns on the GM education web site that glyphosate in human breast milk, which may be 100 times the level thought safe, is far from the only environmental toxin accumulating in the human body.
“Bisphenol A (BPA, a plastic component), PBDEs (used in flame retardants), perchlorate (used in rocket fuel), perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs, used in floor cleaners and non-stick pans), phthalates (used in plastics), polyvinyl chloride (PVC, commonly known as vinyl) and the heavy metals cadmium, lead and mercury” are also found in the human body, especially breast milk, reports the New York Times.
Older chemicals, especially pesticides, also remain in the human body — like DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxin, heptachlor, chlordane, Aldrin and Dieldrin. They impair the endocrine, reproductive, circulatory, immune, and central nervous systems.
The truth is Monsanto and its biotech/Big Ag cousins have not just hijacked the food supply and food economy; poisoned plants, animals and the environment; annihilated small and independent farmers, and created genetic drift, resistance and new diseases — they have created alarming new risks to human health too. In addition to their deadly chemicals, studies note Monsanto’s GMOs increase human allergy susceptibility, suppress the immune system and possibly cause autism and cancer. In 2009, a temporary ban on glyphosate was sought in Argentina after a high incidence of birth defects and cancers was reported in people living near crop-spraying areas, as Scientific American reported. And just last month, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer published a report which concluded that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
Luckily scientists and clinicians have identified some ways in which these unwanted toxins can be removed or lessened in the body. Perhaps the most overarching way to prevent the build-up of toxins is to pursue a detoxified lifestyle — that is according to Dr. Robert Zieve, an integrative medicine expert and medical director of Partners in Integrative Cancer Therapies, in Prescott, AZ.
“How do we engage in this lifelong process of detoxification? As a foundation, this involves eating healthy food. This means organic, GMO-free food,” he said in an email interview. “Herbs such as cilantro help us to eliminate metals such as lead and mercury,” he said. “Herbs like turmeric and garlic help to lower the levels of inflammation that are often the underlying causes [of chronic diseases.]”
To guard against endocrine disruptors, which can cause hormonal imbalances, osteoporosis and increase cancer risk, Dr. Zieve told Reset he recommends “adaptogenic combination of herbs such as combinations of high quality forms of Siberian ginseng, ashwagandha, rhodiola, and others similar herbs,” as well herbs such as milk thistle and dandelion root, urtica/nettles and cruciferous vegetables.
Colon hydrotherapy, far infrared saunas when used correctly, clay baths and castor oil packs applied to the liver can also be useful, he said.
Philosophically, Dr. Zieve said, “Detoxification is a lifelong process. The body already knows how to do this. We just need to get out of the way and support it in doing what it already knows how to do.”
Reset also caught up with Dr. Cate Shanahan, author of Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional Foods to ask her opinion of living toxin-free lifestyle. While Dr. Shanahan confirms that endocrine disrupters like PCBs and DDT can “stay in the body for a long time,” she is not a big fan of supplements or chelation. Even fasting has its limits, she said, and is mostly valuable “for brief periods and only in conjunction with other modalities that optimize metabolism.”
Dr. Shanahan says a healthy, balanced diet “rich in a variety of fresh, ideally organic/biodynamic vegetables with healthy fats, prepared by steaming or fermentation, is your best bet.”
An overall lifestyle change is a great baseline, but there are also some specific plants and natural therapies that can amp up your detoxifying capabilities. While some doctors, like gastroenterologist Nasir Moloo believe the kidneys, liver, lungs and skin of healthy people provide sufficient detoxification without the help of preparations and aids, as he told NBC News, medical literature contains studies that suggest there are indeed specific methods to help your body more efficiently remove toxic byproducts.
Here are 10 detoxifying techniques which have solid science behind them:
1. Indian Gooseberry (also called Phyllanthus emblica Linn and Indian amla) In studies in the Journal of Basic and Clinical Physiology and Pharmacology and Food and Function, the gooseberry/amla, an ingredient in some detox preparations, has been shown to be effective in preventing and lessening the toxic effects on the liver of alcohol, heavy metals (including “iron overload”), medications which can be toxic to the liver, and environmental pathogens or fungi. The “hepatoprotective” actions of gooseberry/amla appear to be “mediated by its free radical scavenging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and modulation of the xenobiotic detoxification process and lipid metabolism,” says the Food and Function study.
2. Chlorella Chlorella, a single-cell green algae belonging to the phylum Chlorophyta plant, has long been thought to have beneficial effects in the human body — whether against inflammation or disease risks. A recent study in the journal Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology confirms chlorella’s ability to detoxify heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) — carcinogens that are created when dripping meat fat is burned — in the human body. The National Cancer Institute warns against cooking meat over open flames and barbecues because of the dangers of these compounds.
3. Milk Thistle (silymarin) Milk thistle is a flowering herb in the ragweed family which some studies have shown is effective in helping the liver detoxify from dangerous elements. In the journal Acta medica Hungarica, workers exposed to the industrial toxins toluene and xylene “significantly improved” when given concentrated Milk Thistle (Legalon) compared to untreated workers. The journal, Investigational New Drugs, wrote that silymarin in mice “markedly protects against chemically induced renal cancer and acts plausibly by virtue of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities.”
4. Pomegranate Bark (also called Punica granatum, producing Punicalagin/PC) The bark of the pomegranate fruit exerts detoxification processes according to several scientific studies. “We have demonstrated antioxidant and antigenotoxic properties of Punica granatum,” wrote researchers in the open access journal BioMed Research International. Pomegranates contain ellagic acid which can inhibit the breast cancer-linked enzyme aromatase, an article on About.com about breast cancer says. “Pomegranate bioactives” inhibit the DNA damage done by Benzo[a]pyrene (BP), an extreme carcinogen found in coal tar, report the researchers. Pomegranates also have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic effects according to the Journal of Medicinal Food.
5. Cilantro (also called Coriander) Several studies have demonstrated that the well-known cooking herb cilantro, also called coriander, can be useful in reducing liver toxicity — called hepatotoxicity — by inhibiting undesirable oxidation processes. A study in the journal Toxicology and Industrial Health for example finds “treatment with coriander leaves and seeds helps in improving the adverse effect… [of] hepatotoxicity” in animals. The Journal of Pharmacy And Bioallied Sciences says cilantro “possesses hepatoprotective activity which may be due to the antioxidant potential of phenolic compounds.”
6. Sulphur-Containing Foods Foods that contain sulfur, like broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale, are valuable for two reasons. Their sulfur releases a substance that activates potent antioxidant and detoxification enzymes according to the Needs.com website. Meanwhile, another substance in such cruciferous plants, indole-3-carbinol, helps deactivate potent estrogen metabolites, which may protect against cancers caused by the hormone-mimicking endocrine disrupters according to the journal, Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology. The sulfur-related compound MSM is also useful in detoxification according to some practitioners on the website Food Matters.
7. Chelation For decades, natural clinicians have recommended chelation, the administration of substances like porphine and EDTA, to trap and usher toxic metals like arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury out of the body, according to the web site Livestrong. But chelation’s acceptance in the scientific community has been slow in coming. Recently, a large federally-funded chelation trial, known as TACT, showed positive results and scientists are giving the metal reduction method a second look. A study in Scientific World Journal says in describing how it works that peptides “chelate both essential and toxic elements as they are sequestered, transported, and excreted…enhancing natural chelation detoxification pathways.” A related metal binding therapy uses zeolites, aluminosilicate minerals, that can absorb and catalyze toxins including lead says the journal Biological Trace Element Research.
8. Wolfberry (also called Lycium barbarum polysaccharide, LBP) Ingredients found in the wolfberry plant called LBP has demonstrated antioxidative, antiaging properties and antitumor activities in scientific studies. A study in the Journal of Drug Design, Development and Therapy says “LBPs protect the liver from injuries due to exposure to toxic chemicals or other insults” and “reduce irradiation — or chemotherapy-induced organ toxicities.” The wolfberry agents are also thought to protect against “neuronal injury,” amyloid-related harm and factors thought to contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, says the article.
9. Intestinal Treatments Colonic cleansing routines including coffee enemas have been the basis of many natural detoxification methods for years including the Gerson regimen. Though they no longer have medical standing, coffee enemas were found in the doctors’ Merck Manual until the mid 1970s. Suzy Cohen, a.k.a. “America’s Pharmacist™” says coffee enemas “jumpstart your liver and gallbladder” and cause bile to flow. To cleanse the gut, health practitioners also recommend cascara sagrada, burdock root, psyllium husks and other fiber containing plants. An article in Drug Metabolism and Disposition cites the value of activated charcoal in gut cleansing and probiotics to replenish a “microdome“ compromised by toxins.
10. Clay Clay treatments, taken internally or externally as baths or skin treatments, like the “living, swelling clays” calcium bentonite and montmorillonites, are used in detoxification regimes. An article in the journal Chemosphere speculates that “adsorption on the clay can reduce the extent of the DNA damage caused by heavy metals” such as cadium and mercury.
Dr. Miriam Jang, M.D., says: “I have put a huge number of patients on these clay baths and the levels of heavy metals — mercury, lead, arsenic, aluminum, and cadmium have come down dramatically.” Dr. Jang describes one patient with high levels of mercury whose levels came down after three months of bath treatment, supporting “the theory that mercury is sequestered in different areas of our body and it takes time to get it all out.”

The human digestive system plays a critical role in keeping out toxic and allergenic chemicals out of the bloodstream by a maintaining the “gut-blood barrier”. This barrier is composed mostly of intestinal epithelial cells and tight junction proteins that exist between them- along with a layer of protective glycoproteins called mucins. Disruptions of the “gut-blood barrier” can cause “leaky gut syndrome which can allow toxins and undigested allergenic proteins to enter the bloodstream. This leaky gut syndrome is believed to be related to many chronic diseases including asthma, chronic fatigue, food allergy/ intolerance, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, autism, dementia, and other autoimmune diseases (1). Eating probiotic bacteria and/or the fatty phospholipid lecithin has been associated with stronger gut barriers and lower levels of leaky gut related health symptoms (2).
Various studies have suggested that exposure to mycotoxins and/or the common intestinal fungi Candida are associated with significantly worse gut barrier function (3, 4). Common foodborne mycotoxins include deoxynivalenol (DON or vomittoxin), aflatoxins, ochratoxins, and zearalenone. Mycotoxins primarily damage the intestinal cells by causing DNA and oxidative damage (3). Mycotoxins can also damage the mucin barrier of the intestines. Gut mycotoxins can also reduce populations of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus (3).
Heavy intestinal Candida growth can also reduce gut barriers. Various leaky gut experimental models have shown that heavy Candida intestinal growth can stimulate IL-9 (Interleukin-9) and intestinal mucosa mast cells and cause leaky gut, inflammation, and diarrhea (4).

My dreams are too small, my desires are too selfish, my actions are too sinful for me to focus on what I think is best. Father, you know I can be down and discouraged. You know my weaknesses.
I pray you would give me the courage to see that my life is about Christ. I need to follow his life and love you as he did on earth. I pray my life would be about adding to your reputation. I pray my focus would be consumed with showing gratitude for the grace and mercy given to me.
Father, I confess that my energy is too often spent on the script I want to write. Help me to have the humility to see that you are the only one I can trust to write my script, my story. May you grant that my story would become your story. May your words become my words.
I confess that I often want only what seems good to me and for me. Help me see that what I want most, even if it is a “good” thing, may not be what you want for me. Help me to love you more than what I love here on earth.
I pray for clarity and grace to see that you do not treat me as my sins deserve. I pray for wisdom not to trust what I think my story should be. I pray for the grace to see that obeying you is my blessing and my reward.
May my life become a living narrative that points to you and not to me. I pray in the name of Jesus, your son, my savior and my God. Amen.
